Who is Black Girls Mental Health?

+

The Black Girls Mental Health Collective (BGMHC) and the Black Girls Mental Health Foundation (BGMHF) collaborate seamlessly to ensure affordable and comprehensive mental health services are accessible to Black women and families. The Collective delivers direct services, including culturally competent therapy, perinatal mental health education, and training for birth workers and medical providers. Meanwhile, the Foundation plays a critical role by securing funding to make these services accessible to those who need them most. Through the Foundation’s therapy voucher program, low-income and underinsured Black women can receive a full year of mental health care at no cost, removing financial barriers that often prevent access to necessary support. Additionally, the Foundation funds perinatal mental health training scholarships, ensuring that providers are equipped with the skills and cultural understanding to meet the unique needs of Black women during pregnancy and postpartum.

Together, these entities create a comprehensive system of care that prioritizes equity and empowerment. The Collective’s expertise in delivering evidence-based interventions and the Foundation’s focus on fundraising and advocacy work in tandem to address the gaps in mental health services for Black women. This collaboration extends beyond individual care, as the Foundation supports research and community initiatives led by the Collective to identify systemic barriers and innovative solutions for improving maternal mental health outcomes. By combining their efforts, BGMHC and BGMHF create a holistic model that not only provides essential services but also fosters long-term change in how mental health care is delivered and accessed by Black women.

Our Herstory

The FOUNDATION

The Black Girls Mental Health Foundation (BGMHF) is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, dedicated to advancing mental health care and systemic support for Black women and girls. As a tax-exempt entity, we rely on generous contributions, which are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law. Donors receive detailed receipts for their records.

Founded with a vision of dismantling systemic barriers in mental health care, BGMHF provides culturally affirming and trauma-informed services, addressing significant disparities that disproportionately affect Black women and girls. We focus on critical initiatives, including:

  1. Therapy Vouchers: Offering financial assistance to low-income Black mothers to access therapy services.

  2. Training Scholarships: Supporting perinatal mental health training for healthcare providers and birth workers.

  3. The BIRTH Network: Connecting birthing individuals with essential wellness resources during the perinatal period.

  4. Positive Pathways Initiative: Expanding mental health access for marginalized youth.

Through these initiatives, we have served thousands of individuals and families, fostering resilience, empowerment, and holistic well-being. Since our establishment, BGMHF has delivered over 20,000 hours of culturally tailored mental health services, backed by a robust team of experienced clinicians and community advocates.

Your support directly contributes to expanding these life-changing programs, enabling us to transform lives through education, advocacy, and care. Together, we can build a future where mental health equity is not just an aspiration, but a reality.

The Black Girls Mental Health Foundation, founded by three Black mothers and clinicians, is dedicated to improving postpartum mental health for Black women and birthing individuals by addressing systemic barriers. Through our BIRTH Network, we connect families to Black providers, including therapists, doulas, and wellness experts, while integrating wearable technology for comprehensive care. Since 2024, we've served 127 families, provided 660 hours of therapy (40% at reduced cost), and launched a Clinical Birth Worker Internship Program to train the next generation of culturally competent providers. Join us in creating a future where Black mothers feel safe, heard, and supported.

The collective

The Black Girls Mental Health Collective (The Collective) is dedicated to empowering Black women and girls through culturally responsive mental health services, education, and advocacy. We address unique challenges rooted in systemic barriers, stigma, and historical trauma by creating accessible and inclusive spaces for healing, growth, and resilience.

Our mission includes providing high-quality mental health care, maternal mental health programs, and peer-led initiatives that prioritize trauma-informed care, perinatal mental health, and family well-being. Services include individual therapy, training for birth workers and healthcare providers, and community-based workshops to empower parents navigating early parenthood. By fostering strong networks of support, we create opportunities for Black women and girls to connect, share experiences, and build meaningful relationships.

Beyond direct services, The Collective is committed to driving systemic change. We collaborate with community partners, healthcare providers, and policymakers to expand access to culturally competent care, advocate for mental health equity, and dismantle systemic barriers. Through research, education, and public awareness initiatives, we aim to amplify the voices of Black women and girls, ensuring their mental health needs are at the forefront of broader societal conversations.

Guided by a vision of mental health equity, we strive to break down barriers, transform outcomes, and create a brighter future for Black women and girls. Through our work, we continue to foster empowerment, healing, and resilience within the communities we serve.
