Helping Black Families Rebuild After the LA Fires
Our Commitment to Black Families Displaced by the Devastating Wildfires in Los AngeleS
The recent wildfires in Los Angeles have displaced thousands of families, including many Black families in the historic community of Altadena. Once a rare haven for Black homeownership during the Civil Rights era, Altadena now faces the risk of losing its rich cultural legacy due to this disaster. At Black Girls Mental Health Foundation (BGMHF), we are dedicated to providing critical support to these families—helping them rebuild and heal during this difficult time.
Our Efforts
We are working tirelessly to support Black families affected by the wildfires by:
Offering Free Therapy Services: We are offering free short-term crisis management therapy sessions to anyone who has experienced loss during the fires. Crisis management focuses on providing immediate emotional support and coping strategies during this difficult time. For those with insurance, we will waive all co-pays to remove financial barriers. Additionally, if ongoing care is needed, our team is committed to working with you long-term to support your healing journey. Request therapy here.
Delivering Essential Supplies: We are collecting donations and delivering essential items such as:
Diapers
Baby wipes
Clothing (all sizes)
Gift cards (grocery stores, Amazon, Target)
Bottles, formula, and personal care products
Providing Personalized Support:
We’re directly reaching out to affected families to understand their unique needs, offering assistance in scheduling therapy sessions, delivering supplies, and connecting them to additional resources.
Special Focus on Altadena
Altadena has long been a symbol of Black generational progress, with a homeownership rate of over 81% among Black families—double the national average. The fires have put this hard-earned progress at risk, with many families now struggling to recover without the resources to rebuild. By focusing our efforts on Altadena, we aim to preserve this historic community and support families in staying rooted in their homes.
